MTG in 1st Q was out fundraised by Democrat challenger, spent more than raised, but still formidable

Federal election filings show the top Georgia Democrat trying to unseat incumbent GOP Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene out fundraised her – another sign the freshman congresswoman is vulnerable in her 2022 reelection bid.

Challenger Marcus Flower, an Army veteran and former military contractor, took in $2.4 million in donations in the first quarter of this year, compared to $1.1 million for Greene.

Federal Election Commission filings also show that Greene during the January-March period spent $1.38 million, for a net loss of about $300,000, according to Yahoo News. 

The spending included $140,000 for security and a retainer fee to Trump lawyer John Eastman.

Still, the ultra-conservative, Trump-backed Greene, whose comments and actions have been a headache for House GOP leadership, remains a formidable midterm candidate.

Greene has significantly more cash on hand, about $3 million, compared to $1.9 million for Flowers. And she has overall out-raised Flowers in the race, about $8.4 million vs. roughly $7.1 million. 

In addition, Georgia's 14th Congressional District, in which they are competing, has a Republican plus-27 rating, making it the 10th most Republican district in the country, according to Ballotpedia. Former President Trump in his failed 2020 reelection bid carried the district by about 50 points.

Flowers must still win his party's May primary in which he'll face Holly McCormack and Wendy Davis, with each having raised considerably less than Flowers.
