Republican South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster won the GOP primary in his gubernatorial reelection bid on Tuesday evening.

If McMaster wins the general election, he would go on to serve 10 years in office. He served the rest of former Gov. Nikki Haley's term when she left to become U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He then won the governor's race in 2018.

South Carolina limits governors to two terms in office.

On Tuesday, McMaster defeated Harrison Musselwhite, a conservative trucker who was running against government control such as vaccine mandates.

In the general election, McMaster will face former South Carolina Rep. Joe Cunningham, who won the Democratic primary for governor on Tuesday.
