Squad member sunk: Jamaal Bowman loses bitter, costly New York primary
Latimer narrowly defeated Bowman, after entering the race with political clout as the popular county executive for Westchester County.
Democratic New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman lost a tough primary on Tuesday night that exposed divisions in the Democratic party, defeated by his affluent pro-Israel challenger George Latimer, the Associated Press has projected.
Latimer narrowly defeated Bowman, after entering the race with political clout as the popular county executive for Westchester County. Latimer was also supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which targeted Bowman for his pro-Palestinian views on the war in Israel.
Bowman's defeat makes him the first member of the progressive "Squad" to lose their primary, after fellow Squad member Rep. Summer Lee from Pennsylvania won her primary in April. Although Bowman lost his primary, one of the Squad's most prominent members, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez won her primary on Tuesday night.
