RNC, Minnesota GOP demand secretary of state probe non-citizen's receipt of primary ballot

The Republican National Committee and the Minnesota GOP have demanded the Minnesota secretary of state launch a probe into how a non-citizen appeared on the voter rolls and received a primary ballot without registering to vote.

The RNC announced on Thursday that it sent a letter with the state GOP to Minnesota Secretary of State Steven Simon (D) last Monday, calling on him to review the state's voter rolls, investigate how the non-citizen was registered to vote and sent a ballot, and provide information on how the office ensures that only U.S. citizens are on the voter rolls.

The non-citizen is legally residing in Minnesota and is concerned that despite not registering to vote or requesting a ballot, receiving the ballot could affect his residency or future eligibility for citizenship.

"The risk of noncitizens engaging in election activities in Minnesota has never been greater," the letter reads. "Following the passage of HF4-2023, individuals seeking to obtain a Minnesota driver’s license or identification card are no longer required to provide proof of citizenship or lawful presence."

HF4-2023 is Minnesota's “Driver’s License for All” law that Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, who is Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, signed into law last year.

"Minnesotans deserve full confidence that their elections are secure and non-citizens have no vote in the future of our country," RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a statement. "We will take every step necessary to ensure that the failures in the system are brought to light and immediately resolved. Non-citizen voting is illegal across America, and that must be enforced at every turn."
