Gov. DeSantis says he will restore Confederate general's name to Fort Liberty if elected president

Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis says if he is elected president in 2024, he will restore a Confederate general's name to a U.S. military base in North Carolina. 

The army base Fort Bragg changed its name to Fort Liberty at the initiative of the Department of Defense.

“I also look forward to, as President, restoring the name of Fort Bragg to our great military base in Fayetteville, North Carolina,” DeSantis said during a North Carolina convention Friday.

“It’s an iconic name and iconic base, and we’re not gonna let political correctness run amok," he continued, according to the Washington Times.

Retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Ty Seidule said at a commission meeting last year that Fort Liberty would be the new name of the base because "liberty remains the greatest American value." 

Fort Liberty is not the only base that got a name change. According to CBS, other bases will be renamed after black soldiers, U.S. presidents and women. But Fort Bragg is the only one not renamed after a person. 

The next one scheduled for a name change is Fort Polk in Louisiana, which will have its name changed on June 13 to Fort Johnson, in honor of Sgt. William Henry Johnson.
