Ex-Trump ambassador to Iceland considering run for Democrat's Nevada Senate seat
Former Ambassador Dr. Jeffrey Gunter say incumbent Democrat Sen. Jacky Rosen dragged down by "antics of Joe Biden"
Former Ambassador to Iceland Dr. Jeffrey Gunter says he's considering running for US Senate in Nevada.
"We are seriously looking at it," Gunter, who an Iceland ambassador in the Trump administration, said Thursday on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show when asked if he would run.
"The reality for all is: If not now, when? We all have to stand up. We have to step forward. We have to stop this encroachment of government on our daily lives."
Dr. Gunter is a dermatologist who served as the ambassador from 2019 to 2021, is eyeing the seat held by first-term Democrat incumbent Jacky Rosen.
"Jacky Rosen has been dragged down continuously by the antics of Joe Biden and the corruption and everything that we've seen," he said. "So her numbers are weak [and] it's a wide-open GOP field."
Former Nevada Assemblyman Jim Marchant has announced his bid to win the GOP nomination and a retired Army Capt. Sam Brown is also expected to join, according to The Nevada Independent.
Gunter said he's confident that the people of Nevada will vote red come 2024 due to President Biden's policies.
"The voters in Nevada are smart," he said. "They see it. They see the encroachment. They see what they're paying for gas. They see what's going on at the border. They see crime. They see all these issues that are happening and quite frankly, the voters of Nevada don't want it anymore."
Gunter owns his own practice, called SummitMD Dermatology. which has locations in Nevada, Arizona, California and Texas.
He has over 38 years of experience in the medical field, including in the areas of skin cancer excision and cosmetic skin procedures.
"Having taken care of families for a very long time and having strong foreign policy experience – we're hoping to get in this race and we're gonna make a difference for the people," Gunter said.
While he hasn't officially announced, Gunter has implied a campaign announcement may be coming soon.
"We're excited," he said. "The polling is leaning our way and we're looking forward to hopefully getting engaged on this. But we still haven't officially declared, but we are seriously looking into this and the people of Nevada want it as well."
