Schiff, Garvey advance in California's Senate primary contest
The race is to fill the final weeks of the late Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s term.
California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican candidate Steve Garvey on Tuesday night were the top-two finishers in the state's open Senate primary race.
The Associated Press declared the victory for Schiff at about 11:30 p.m. ET with him having 36.9% of the vote and 36% of votes having been counted.
The wire service declared Garvey the second-place finisher shortly after midnight. He had 29.2% when declared the second-biggest vote-getter.
Schiff and Garvey now advance to the general election.
The race is to fill the seat of the late Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
In California, all candidates run on the same ballot, and the top-two vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of party.
