Actor Eduardo Verástegui, producer of the hit film "Sound of Freedom," has registered as an independent candidate for the Mexican presidency, according to an official announcement translated from Spanish on his Instagram page.
A Mexican journalist also posted video on Friday to the social media platform X of Verástegui formally registering as a candidate.
The general election for Mexican president takes place June 2, 2024.
"After a period of discernment, I made the most important decision of my life: I have just registered with the INE [National Electoral Institute] my intention as an aspiring independent candidate for the presidency of the Mexican Republic for the elections on June 2, 2024," Verástegui wrote Thursday on Instagram translated from Spanish.
"My fight is for life. My fight is for freedom. It is time to remove the same old people from power. Our country needs a new way of doing politics, to eradicate corruption and impunity," he also wrote.
Verástegui was a lead organizer of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in Mexico in 2022.
