Supreme Court to release decisions Monday, with Colorado ruling on Trump, ballot a possibility

Supreme Court watchers think justices will on Monday announce their decision on the Trump 14th Amendment, 'insurrection' case, based on an unusual weekend update.

The high court signaled Sunday it will release at least one opinion Monday morning, a possible signal the justices could hand down a decision on the case, which involves the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that former President Trump, now a 2024 GOP presidential candidate, is ineligible because of his efforts to defy the 2020 election results.

Trump is on the state primary ballot on Tuesday after a hold was placed on the ruling, according to NBC News.

The Supreme Court held oral arguments in February on whether Trump can be barred from the ballot because of what he said before the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, in opposition to the election results. 

The high court does not announce in advance which decisions it will release on a specific day, but the possibility remains it could hand down opinions in any of the several dozen pending cases on its docket.

The court provided less than 24 hours notice of Monday’s opinion release, compared with notices usually being announced multiple days in advance, according to The Hill newspaper.

In addition, Monday is also the day before primary voters in Colorado – and more than a dozen other states – will cast their ballots.

The hundreds of ballots at stake on Super Tuesday that Trump is expected to win would move him very close to locking up the Republican nomination.

Section 3 of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment states people are not eligible to serve in government if they “engaged in insurrection.”
