Trump, Biden expected to visit southern U.S. border on same day
Biden visited the border one time before as president.
Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden are both expected to visit the southern border on Thursday, foreshadowing how illegal immigration is set to be a major issue in the 2024 presidential race.
Biden is set to travel to Brownsville, Texas, people familiar with his plans told The New York Times on Monday. Trump's trip to Eagle Pass, Texas, was first reported last week.
Brownsville is located at the very southern tip of Texas, while Eagle Pass, the location of a major border enforcement standoff between Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the Biden administration, is located more than 300 miles north along the Texas-Mexico border.
Biden visited the border one time before as president, when he went to El Paso, Texas, in January 2023, per CNN. He visited a migrant center but it did not appear that he actually saw or met with migrants.
With both men as the likely nominees for their parties in the 2024 election, illegal immigration is set to be a major issue for voters when they head to the polls this November.
