Alexander Vindman, a witness in President Donald Trump's first impeachment, announced Tuesday that he is running for the U.S. Senate from Florida, challenging GOP Sen. Ashley Moody.

Vindman's testimony in the House provided evidence for the chamber's first Trump impeachment trial in 2019, where he said he believed the president's eagerness to investigate former President Joe Biden and his family's ties to business interests in Ukraine was "inappropriate," and felt he had to report it out of a "sense of duty."

The Senate acquitted Trump in the case and Vindman was fired from his position with the National Security Council.

Vindman acknowledged his history with Trump in his campaign video, indicating that the country "is in chaos" because of the president, according to Politico

“This president unleashed a reign of terror and retribution, not just against me and my family, but against all of us,” he said in the two-minute video. “Today, our country is in chaos.”

Vindman also claimed Moody was tapped by Florida leadership to be a "yes" vote for Trump's allies and other billionaires.

“She’s not Florida’s senator,” the narrator in the video said. “She’s theirs.”

Moody was appointed to the Senate last year to replace Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She faces reelection in a special election this November. The winner of the November election will still need to run again for a full term in 2028.
