White House's McEnany shares story of mastectomy, Trump's support for working mothers and the sick
'This president loves the American people, stands by Americans with preexisting conditions and supports working moms' – White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnary on Wednesday retold the story of her double-mastectomy and the compassionate support she received from President Trump and his family.
“During one of my most difficult times, I expected to have the support of my family, but I had more support than I knew,” McEnany said about her 2018 preventive surgery.
"One of the first calls I received was from Ivanka Trump," McEnany said in an emotional speech, on the third night of the Republican National Convention.
The next call was from President Trump.
"Though I didn’t personally know the president at the time, I know him well now. And I can tell you that this president loves the American people, stands by Americans with preexisting conditions and supports working moms," said McEnany, a wife and mother of a 9-month-old.
McEnany's mother had to have the same surgery because she carried the BRCA 2 genetic mutation, which resulted in McEnany at 21 being tested, found to have the same mutation and choosing to have the same preventative mastectomy.
"Choosing to have a preventative mastectomy was the hardest decision I have made," she said. "But supporting President Trump, who will protect my daughter and our children’s future, was the easiest."
