Va. Gov. Youngkin to travel to Maine to endorse GOP gubernatorial candidate

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin plans to travel to Maine to endorse GOP gubernatorial candidate Paul LePage for the upcoming election. 

LePage served as governor of Maine from 2011 to 2019, and Maine's laws allow him to run for a third term. His opponent will be the current Democrat governor Janet Mills, who is leading in the polls right now by roughly four points, The Hill reports. 

LePage is a controversial figure and has drawn some criticism for referring to himself as the "Donald Trump before Donald Trump," according to The Hill.

Virginia Democrats criticized Youngkin for supporting LePage on their twitter account, calling him "disgraceful."

"Apparently Governor Youngkin is now 'familiar' with LePage's racist comments and still chooses to go and campaign for him," the tweet read. "Disgraceful."

The GOP governor has been campaigning for other Republican candidates such as Tudor Dixon, who is the Republican nominee for the governor of Michigan. 

Youngkin had a big victory with his gubernatorial win in Virginia, turning the state red for the first time since 2013. He is now rumored as a possible candidate for president in 2024 or 2028.
