Coalition of 130 Republicans urges Biden admin to drop 'EV mandate'

Over 100 Republicans in the House and Senate are urging the Biden administration to reject proposed fuel standards, which will require a large number of vehicles on the road to be electric over the next decade.

Sens. Mike Crapo, Idaho, and Ted Cruz, Texas, along with Rep. Tim Walberg, Michigan, are leading the coalition of 130 Republicans, Fox News reports, in requesting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revise its fuel economy standards in a way that doesn’t “seek to pick winners and losers in the free market and remake our country’s economy.”

The group wrote agency Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman, warning that the agency’s proposed standards would raise cost, restrict consumer choice, harm businesses and undermine the nation’s energy and national security.

"Nowhere in law did Congress authorize NHTSA to set fuel economy standards that effectively mandate EVs while at the same time force the internal combustion engine out of the market," the coalition’s letter stated.

The letter also argues the proposed rules, if finalized, would effectively require the mass production of electric vehicles.
