American Airlines on Thursday announced it's suspending "select routes" in August and September as high fuel costs strain the company's budget. 

The Texas-based airline said that impacted travelers would be offered alternative flights to reach their destinations, or it would grant them refunds, the Associated Press reported. 

The suspended routes would be temporary, the company said, and it noted that it offers more flights than any other U.S. airline. 

The flights being suspended, according to CBS News, are:

• Los Angeles to Cleveland
• Los Angeles to Columbus
• Los Angeles to Pittsburgh
• Los Angeles to Washington Dulles
• Charlotte to Ontario
• Charlotte to Sacramento

Jet fuel accounts for approximately 30% of an airline's total expenses. Many other airlines are responding to high fuel costs by canceling flights, slimming schedules, raising fees and cutting perks.
