Beryl makes landfall in Texas as Category 1 hurricane

Hurricane Beryl made landfall on the Texas coast Monday morning with sustained winds of about 85 mph, knocking out power to more than half a million homes and businesses

The storm made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at about 4 a.m. Central Standard Time in Matagorda – about 85 miles southwest of Houston, according to the Associated Press.

Beryl left a path of deadly destruction last week through parts of Mexico and the Caribbean, before weakening to a tropical storm. It regains strengthened and became a hurricane again late Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico. 

The storm is expected to bring damaging winds into East Texas, near Louisiana, as the storm pushed north after making landfall, the wire service also reports.
