New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that 18 people died from extreme cold weather.

Another person over the weekend "lost their life on the streets of our city," Mamdani said on Monday, adding that "each life lost is a tragedy, and we will continue to hold their families in our thoughts," the BBC reported.

While temperatures are expected to rise this week, they are still below average, with Mamdani telling New York City residents to "stay safe, stay indoors... [and] keep looking out for one another."

The city has experienced a cold snap since late last month, including 13 days of temperatures of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below, which is one of the longest stretches of subfreezing temperatures that New York has seen in 60 years.

Mamdani said that since Jan. 19, when a Code Blue emergency was announced, about 1,400 placements had been made into shelters. A Code Blue emergency relaxes intake policies for homeless shelters.

He noted that an additional 64 hotel rooms had been added to the city's shelter capacity, with at least another 150 outreach workers on the streets.

Mamdani said last month that at least 10 of the people who had died were found outdoors. The circumstances regarding the other deaths are unknown.

"We have been working hard to keep New Yorkers safe, and we will continue to do so. Because it is not forecast to be above 32 degrees [Fahrenheit] until tomorrow, and 35 degrees is hardly balmy weather," Mamdani said.
