George Santos raised no money last quarter for independent House bid

Former New York Republican Rep. George Santos's independent campaign reported raising no money last month to finance his longshot bid to return to the House.

Santos in March announced his plans for a primary challenge to New York GOP Rep. Nick LaLota, one of many lawmakers who voted to remove him from Congress last year. Later that month, he instead announced his plans for an independent campaign.

A Monday filing with the Federal Election Commission showed him raising no money and engaging in no activity in March to that end, Politico reported. A separate filing from his 2020 campaign further revealed that campaign was hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

Santos was elected to Congress in 2022, flipping the competitive NY-03 district, though it was later discovered he had fabricated much of his resume and he was later indicted in October 2023 on federal charges. The House expelled him in December of that year following a damning Ethics Committee report.

Democratic New York Rep. Tom Suozzi, who had previously represented the district but whom Santos did not face in 2020, later won a special election to fill the seat.
