New Hampshire resident infected by mosquito-borne eastern equine encephalitis virus dies

A New Hampshire resident infected by the mosquito-borne eastern equine encephalitis virus has died, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday.  

The patient was hospitalized with severe central nervous system symptoms, state health authorities said, noting that it was the first eastern equine encephalitis virus case in the state in a decade.   

There is currently no antiviral treatment or vaccine to treat the virus.  

Roughly one-third of those who develop encephalitis after infection with the virus die, and there are about 11 cases each year in the United States, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
