House GOP seeks FBI record on Biden family China deal
"Recently, Gal Luft, who alleges to have worked with certain Biden family associates, has publicized an account that raises significant concerns," Comer said.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer asked on Wednesday that the FBI provide his panel an unredacted copy of a bureau report related to a March 2019 meeting between the FBI, the Department of Justice, and Dr. Gal Luft during which the latter allegedly provided information related to a Biden family deal with a Chinese energy company.
Luft was arrested in Cyprus in February but secured release pending extradition and has since disappeared. The Israeli-American dual citizen surfaced in a video last week in which he claimed to have provided such information to the government while alleging that his arrest was an effort to prevent his testimony before the Oversight Committee. The DOJ subsequently unveiled an indictment against him with a Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) violation, arms trafficking, making false statements, and other charges.
"Recently, Gal Luft, who alleges to have worked with certain Biden family associates, has publicized an account that raises significant concerns," Comer said. "Last year, the Department of Justice (DOJ) charged Luft with various federal crimes."
"To be clear, the Committee takes no position regarding the federal charges against Luft," he continued. "Instead, the Committee requests narrowly tailored information he allegedly provided the DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in March 2019 regarding his interactions with the Chinese company, CEFC."
The energy company was a partner in a business deal involving the Biden family that has attracted considerable scrutiny from lawmakers and the administration's conservative detractors, who have alleged that the first family has repeatedly engaged in dubious business deals with foreign actors.
Comer gave FBI Director Christopher Wray a July 19 deadline to produce the record.
