House GOP seeks interview with ex-White House counsel on Biden classified docs
Reports emerged this year that an attorney for Biden had discovered materials marked classified while cleaning out his office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington last November.
House Republicans are seeking materials and an interview form former White House Counsel Dana Remus as part of their investigation into President Joe Biden's handling of classified materials.
"The Committee has obtained information that contradicts important details from the White House’s and President Biden’s personal attorney’s statements about the discovery of documents at the Penn Biden Center, including the location and security of the classified documents," reads a letter from Comer to Remus. "The Committee has learned that you were a central figure in the early stages of coordinating the packing and moving of boxes that were later found to contain classified materials."
Specifically, Comer is seeking information to explain key differences between public statements from the White House and Biden's personal attorney with the account of his former assistant, Kathy Chung.
"The President’s haphazard handling of classified materials raises many additional questions about the repercussions of these actions, including possible threats to national security," Comer asserted. "As you are aware, additional classified material has been discovered at the President’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, including in his garage."
"The Committee believes you may possess information or knowledge that is crucial to understanding how those documents arrived in Delaware, as you played a primary role in the events precipitating the discovery of documents in the President’s CelticCapri corporate headquarters at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C.," he continued.
After forcefully condemning former President Donald Trump's own alleged mishandling of classified materials in the wake of the August 2022 Mar-a-Lago raid, Biden appeared to have egg on his face when his own alleged malfeasance became public.
Reports emerged this year that an attorney for Biden had discovered materials marked classified while cleaning out his office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington last November. The revelation sparked a search of Biden's properties and spaces which turned up additional materials.
Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed special counsel Robert Hur to handle the DOJ's investigation of the matter while Republicans continue to explore the issue independent of the executive branch.
Comer asserted in a press release that the investigation was discovering inconsistencies in the White House narrative.
"The White House’s narrative of President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents is unraveling," he said. "The Oversight Committee’s investigation has obtained several facts that do not support the claims asserted by the Biden team and we have learned that President Biden has a history of not properly storing classified documents."
"Additionally, we have questions about why the White House Counsel’s Office tasked a Department of Defense employee on May 24, 2022—the same day as the subpoena return date for former President Trump—to complete a personal task for President Biden by packing up Penn Biden Center," Comer continued. 'The Oversight Committee needs information from Dana Remus to further inform our investigation about President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents in order to deliver answers, transparency, and accountability for the American people."
