Johnson pledges 'full and unwavering support' for Biden impeachment inquiry
Johnson suggested last week that there existed insufficient evidence to proceed with formal impeachment against Biden the time.
House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday expressed clear support for the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, suggesting the probe was nearing an "inflection point."
"At this stage, our impeachment inquiry has already shown the corrupt conduct of the President’s family, and that he and White House officials have repeatedly lied about his knowledge and involvement in his family’s business activities," he said, according to The Hill. "It has also exposed the tens of millions of dollars from foreign adversaries being paid to shell companies controlled by the President’s son, brother, and their business associates."
The Louisiana lawmaker further stated that he had received an update from the Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees on the matter.
"I commend the good work of Chairmen [James] Comer, [Jim] Jordan, and [Jason] Smith. As we move forward toward an inflection point in this critical investigation, they have my full and unwavering support," he also said. "Now, the appropriate step is to place key witnesses under oath and question them under the penalty of perjury, to fill gaps in the record."
Johnson privately suggested last week that there existed insufficient evidence to proceed with formal impeachment against Biden the time, the Washington Post reported.
His comments followed Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer issuing a subpoena this week to ex-White House Counsel Dana Remus over the president's handling of classified materials.
"The White House refused to provide documents to the Oversight Committee and stated it would not make available the requested White House officials for interviews," Comer said. "Because Ms. Remus has not agreed to voluntarily participate in a transcribed interview, and because the White House has refused to provide the requested documents and to make available White House employees for interviews about this matter, we are subpoenaing Ms. Remus to appear for a deposition."
