Judiciary Republicans demand hearing with AG Garland, U.S. Attorney Weiss over Hunter Biden case
"For the sake of ensuring transparency in the DOJ, we request that you promptly schedule a hearing with Attorney General Garland and U.S. Attorney Weiss," they concluded.
Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee have asked that Committee Chairman Dick Durbin schedule a hearing with Attorney General Merrick Garland and United States Attorney for Delaware David Weiss to clarify their prior statements on the Hunter Biden tax investigation.
The group referenced testimony from IRS whistleblowers that they said "credibly alleges that the Biden Administration's IRS, FBI, and DOJ mishandled the
Hunter Biden tax investigation, by engaging in a 'delay, divulge, and deny' campaign."
Led by Republican South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, the committee's ranking member, Sens. Chuck Grassley, Iowa, John Cornyn, Texas, Mike Lee, Utah, Ted Cruz, Texas, Josh Hawley, Mo., Tom Cotton, Ark., and John Kennedy, La., recounted the seemingly conflicting statements about Weiss's authority to bring charges against the now-first son.
They further mentioned that South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham previously wrote to the pair seeking clarification, but noted that the response from Weiss failed to adequately address their concerns.
"Mr. Weiss told Ranking Member Graham that Weiss had 'never been denied the authority to bring charges in any jurisdiction.' His statements do not fit at all with credible,
corroborated whistleblower testimony," they said.
The testimony from IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, both of whom worked on the Hunter Biden case, indicated that the U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., declined to partner on the case, blocking Weiss from bringing some of the more serious charges. Weiss also allegedly sought special counsel status to bring the charges, but was denied by Garland.
"The seriousness of these developments cannot be overstated," they told Durbin. "The American people deserve the truth, and we have a responsibility to exercise our oversight authority to uncover the truth. As you stated in a similar context, '[t]he American people must have full transparency to draw their own conclusions.'"
"For the sake of ensuring transparency in the DOJ, we request that you promptly schedule a hearing with Attorney General Garland and U.S. Attorney Weiss," they concluded.
