The New Hampshire House this week approved legislation requiring that political ads using artificial intelligence (AI) disclose its use following mass robocalls in the Granite State earlier this year that used an AI-generated voice impression of President Joe Biden.

Under the plan, political ads airing within 90 days of an election must disclose the use of AI technology to manipulate or create audio, video, or images that "depicts speech of conduct that did not occur," according the The Hill. The lower chamber approved the measure without debate on Thursday, sending it to the Senate.

The robocalls earlier this year featured a voice likeness of Biden and urged residents not to vote in the primary, which was held in compliance with state law but not recognized by the Democratic National Committee after the party opted to move the first primary to South Carolina.

The Federal Communications Commission in February banned the use of AI-generated voices in robocalls in response to the fake Biden calls. The move followed the urgings of 26 state attorneys general.
