FCC bans AI voices in robocalls after New Hampshire primary scam
Attorneys general from 26 different states signed a letter in support of the FCC ban.
The Federal Communications Commission has banned the use of AI-generated voices in robocalls, following ones in the recent New Hampshire primary in which one sounding like President Biden urged residents not to vote.
The new rule took effect Thursday, after it was revealed that a Texas company was behind the AI robocalls, according to Axios Dallas.
Attorneys general from 26 states signed a letter in support of the FCC ban.
“Technology is advancing and expanding, seemingly, by the minute, and we must ensure these new developments are not used to prey upon, deceive, or manipulate consumers,” said Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry, one of the signer.
“This new technology cannot be used as a loophole to barrage consumers with illegal calls. I commend the partners in this bipartisan coalition for seeing the potential harm A.I. can present to consumers already overwhelmed by robocalls and text communications.”
New Hampshire is in the process of investigating whether the calls violated election-and-or consumer protection laws.
