Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was released from the hospital on Thursday after sustaining a hammer strike to the head during a home invasion.

Pelosi received treatment at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for a skull fracture and injury to his arm and hand, per NBC News.

The 82-year-old sustained the injury when David DePape allegedly entered his home seeking the House Speaker. Pelosi reportedly spoke to a 911 dispatcher in "code" through an open line, during the incident. The dispatcher was able to discern that Pelosi required assistance and informed the authorities, who arrived in time to reportedly witness DePape strike Pelosi with the hammer.

DePape faces federal charges of assaulting the family member of a public official in retaliation for the performance of their duties and attempted kidnapping. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins has also charged DePape with attempted murder, among a litany of other charges. He was formally arraigned this week and has pleaded not guilty.

The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that DePape, a Canadian native, was in the country illegally after overstaying a visa which expired roughly 20 years ago. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has filed a detainer on DePape following his arrest and he faces deportation.

President Joe Biden and other Democrats were quick to capitalize on the attack, attempting to pin the blame on former President Donald Trump and his supporters for allegedly inciting political violence. Biden referenced the incident in a high-profile speech Wednesday evening during which he derided Trump and his allies as threats to democracy.

A now-deleted Facebook page purportedly belonging to DePape had shared right-wing articles, though those close to him indicated he was mentally ill. He, at one point, listed himself as a member of the Green Party.
