Nearly 40% of Brown students don't identify as straight, university newspaper finds

Nearly 40% of students at Brown University identify as something other than straight, which is more than five times higher than the national rate, according to a poll conducted by the school newspaper. 

The Brown Daily Herald's Spring 2023 poll found that 38% of students do not identify as straight. Most students who are not straight, 17.92%, identify as bisexual while 7.63% say they are homosexual. Smaller percentages of students identified as queer, pansexual, asexual, questioning or in another unlisted category.

It is unclear how many students responded to the poll, and the Brown Daily Herald did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Brown University says it has 10,425 students from 107 nations.

The percentage of Brown students in the newspaper poll who identify as something other than straight is significantly higher than that of the general population. The latest Gallup poll found that 7.2% of U.S. adults identified as LGBT+ last year.
