New poll shows Trump has narrow lead over Biden in possible 2024 rematch
Former President Trump has already declared his candidacy, while President Biden is expected to declare his in the coming weeks.
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows former President Trump leading President Biden in a hypothetical 2024 presidential rematch race.
The poll shows 48% of Americans say they would favor Trump, compared to 45% for Biden. The narrow lead is also within the poll’s margin of error, which makes the hypothetical race essentially a dead heat.
Trump has already declared his 2024 candidacy, while Biden has not. However, the 80-year-old president reportedly plans to seek reelection and officially announce his bid in the coming weeks.
The poll was conducted by telephone Jan. 1- Feb. 1 among 1,003 adults, with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
The poll also found that early in the 2024 election cycle voters have little enthusiasm for a Trump-Biden rematch, despite the nominees in their 2020 race having drawn a record number of voters.
Fifty-eight percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents said they would prefer someone other than Biden as their 2024 nominee, while 31% said they support Biden, according to the poll. The percentages are essentially unchanged since September 2022.
Forty-nine percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they prefer someone other than Trump, compared with 44% who favor the former president. That percent also is essentially unchanged since last September.
