Vice President Kamala Harris trailed former President Donald Trump by just one point in a poll published Tuesday, which was conducted after President Joe Biden departed the presidential race.

The Marist poll found that respondents slightly favored Trump over Harris, with 46% of survey takers supporting Trump and 45% supporting the vice president. Just 9% of respondents said they were undecided.

The respondents were largely split along party lines, but 21% of independent voters said they were still undecided. Trump was notably favored among independents who have decided, with 46% of the vote, compared to 32% for Harris.

“Looking at the toplines after all that’s transpired this month, even though the names have changed, the contest for president all looks very familiar,” Marist polling director Lee Miringoff said in a statement. “But drilling down into the numbers tells a different story as more voters are undecided and others may be rethinking their choice.”

A vast majority of voters (87%) also agreed Biden made the right choice in dropping his bid for reelection on Sunday, with 41% claiming they believe the move will help the Democratic party's chances in November.

The poll was conducted by Marist on Monday, in partnership with NPR and PBS. The survey questioned 1,309 adults nationwide, including 1,117 registered voters, and had a 3.2% margin of error.
