Ramaswamy: Juneteenth a 'useless' holiday
"We shouldn’t have redundant holidays that celebrate overlapping purposes. It should have a distinct purpose," he added.
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy labelled Juneteenth a "useless" holiday, contending that the Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents' Day already effectively address the matters it purports to celebrate.
"Cancel Juneteenth or one of the other useless ones we made up. You can’t have everything be a holiday, but we’ll cancel one of the other ones and make Election Day a holiday," Ramaswamy said at a campaign event in Iowa on Saturday, NBC News reported.
"We shouldn’t have redundant holidays that celebrate overlapping purposes. It should have a distinct purpose," he added.
Ramaswamy further contended that the holiday was created amid intense cultural tensions over the 2020 death of George Floyd, stating "[w]e should not create holidays with a cultural gun to our head, and that’s what happened with Juneteenth," according to The Hill.
The tech mogul has surged to third place in the Republican primary contest, standing behind only former President Donald Trump and Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
