Speaker Johnson pushes back on claims that Trump didn't promote unity after assassination attempt
ABC anchor Martha Raddatz mentioned criticism Trump said of Biden, in which he referred to the president as a “sick, weak, pathetic band.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Sunday pushed back on criticism that President Donald Trump "missed an opportunity" to promote unity after his assassination attempt.
During an interview with ABC News, anchor Martha Raddatz asked Johnson if he thought Trump dodged a chance to promote unity during the Republican National Convention.
She mentioned criticism Trump said of President Joe Biden, in which he referred to the president as a “sick, weak, pathetic man.”
“No, he hasn’t," Johnson said in response to the question, according to The Hill. "Look, there’s campaign rhetoric on both sides … there has been.”
Johnson then brought up a remark Biden made about Trump.
“Remember, it was less than a week and a half ago that President Biden said we’re gonna put Donald Trump in the crosshairs effectively and put him in the center of the bull’s-eye,” Johnson said. “He said now he retracted that statement.”
On July 13, Trump was wounded in an assassination attempt on his life during a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Two other people were injured and one person died.
