New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams faces a lawsuit from the teachers union over his recently announced budget cuts to education, which he announced in November.

The budget cuts would affect nearly all city services, including police, and come amid an unprecedented surge in illegal arrivals to the Big Apple that have strained the city's resources. The United Federation of Teachers, which filed the suit, estimates that schools could see up to a $2 billion loss of funding as a result, Politico reported.

"The administration can't go around touting the tourism recovery and the return of the city's pre-pandemic jobs, and then create a fiscal crisis and cut education because of its own mismanagement of the asylum seeker problem," union President Michael Mulgrew said.

The Big Apple's largest public-sector union, DC, 37 filed its own suit over the cuts earlier this month, claiming Adams did not appropriately vet a plan to eliminate some union jobs.

New York, during Adams's tenure, has witnessed more than 110,000 illegal arrivals amid a broader surge in illegal border crossings under the Biden administration and Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott's policy of bussing them to sanctuary cities.

Adams's popularity has nosedived since taking office, with a December Quinnipiac survey showing he commanded a 28% approval rating amid the migrant situation and an ongoing federal probe into his campaign alleging working with the Turkish government.
