Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick on Trump trial: 'The judge is absolutely corrupt'
"President is under a gag order and cannot speak for himself. But I can," Patrick said.
Texas GOP Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick on Friday issued a statement defending former President Donald Trump and excoriating the proceedings in his ongoing criminal trial.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has charged Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with a 2016 payment his then-attorney, Michael Cohen, made to Stormy Daniels. Trump has pleaded not guilty and contends that the case is part of a broader political witch hunt designed to derail his 2024 bid for the White House. The trial has been ongoing for weeks and the defense rested on Tuesday.
"President is under a gag order and cannot speak for himself. But I can. I spent the day in court with the president recently and it's clear the judge is absolutely corrupt. He's doing everything in his power to help the jury find a pathway to convict the president," Patrick said in a video posted to X.
"The judge kept an expert witness on campaign finance from testifying that the president did not break any campaign finance law," he continued. "The president's lawyers asked the judge to give the jury an instruction that there is no campaign violation by the action the president took. The judge said no."
"In fact. This corrupt judge virtually granted every jury instruction the Biden prosecutors asked for and virtually none of the instructions the Trump team asked for. This is a show trial, like you would see in some tin-pot dictatorship," he went on. "No one would ever imagine that this would happen in America."
