Former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden in a hypothetical 2024 White House rematch amid mounting concerns over the Democrat's mental fitness.

In a head-to-head contest, Trump led Biden 48% to 46% in the latest Fox News survey. Trump's performance was the best of any Republican against whom the survey matched Biden. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley also led Biden by 2%, albeit 45% to 43% in that matchup. All other Republicans led Biden by less or trailed the incumbent president.

Potentially driving Biden's poor performance against Trump is the perception that he is mentally unfit for office. A whopping 61% of registered voters did not believe Biden had the "mental soundness" to serve. That figure appears to have steadily increased since July of 2020, at which time only 39% said such.

By contrast, 52% said Trump lacked the mental soundness for office, up a net 1% from where he stood in July 2020.

Conducted between Sept. 9-12, the survey questioned 1,012 registered voters and has a margin of error of +/- 3%.

Trump leads Biden by 0.5% in the RealClearPolitics polling average, which does include the Fox survey at press time.
