In what's sure to be a pleasant birthday gift to the former president, supporters of Donald Trump have donated $6.6 million in the wake of special counsel Jack Smith's indictment of him on 37 criminal charges.
Trump, who celebrated his 77th birthday on Wednesday, announced the fundraising haul via Truth Social.
"Since deranged Jack Smith took the unprecedented step of weaponizing the justice system to attack his political opponent, Donald J. Trump for President 2024 has raised more than $6.6 million in just a few short days," reads the statement. Smith announced the charges last Friday.
"In a clear sign of the steadfast support President Donald J. Trump enjoys from grassroots Patriots across the nation, over $4.5 million has been raised from digital fundraising, with an additional $2.1 million raised at President Trump's event at Bedminster last night," the statement continued.
After pleading not guilty to all 37 charges at his Miami arraignment on Tuesday, Trump flew to Bedminster, New Jersey were he delivered a speech outlining his legal defense. The former president pointed to the Presidential Records Act and the "Clinton Socks" court case that established the president's sweeping authority to declassify and dispose of records.
Trump, in his Wednesday fundraising statement, insisted that he was "the only candidate who can beat Joe Biden in a general election" and declared that the "American people will not stand for this corrupt attempt to interfere in the 2024 election against the leading candidate for President who will demolish the Deep State and finish the job of draining the Swamp."
