Trump warns of auto industry collapse amid Biden EV push
Under the Biden administration, the government has sought to bolster production and purchase of electric vehicles for climate reasons, including a tax credit for such purchases in the Inflation Reduction Act, among other initiatives.
Former President Donald Trump warned on Monday that the American automotive industry faced collapse and outsourcing to China amid President Joe Biden's push toward electric vehicles.
"The Great State of Michigan will not have an auto industry anymore if Crooked Joe Biden’s crazed concept of 'all Electric Cars' goes into effect," Trump posted on Truth Social. "CHINA WILL TAKE IT ALL, 100%. United Auto Workers, VOTE FOR TRUMP. Get your leaders to ENDORSE ME, I WILL KEEP ALL OF THESE GREAT JOBS, AND BRING IN MANY MORE. CHOICE IN SCHOOLS, AND CHOICE IN CARS!!!"
Michigan, a key battleground state, is traditionally the home of many American automakers. Trump's particular warning appears to come amid reports that the United Auto Workers union is mulling a strike over its demands for higher wages, restored pensions, and a reduced work week, The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.
Many worker contracts are slated to expire on Sept. 14 and the UAW has pushed its demands to major firms such as Ford and General Motors, albeit to no avail thus far.
