President Donald Trump announced Tuesday during a speech in Detroit that his administration will cease federal payments to sanctuary cities and states starting next month amid pushback over his immigration policies.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between the public and federal law enforcement officials and immigration officers over the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. Sanctuary cities and states vow not to cooperate with federal immigration officials in order to protect their illegal residents from deportation.

Trump made the declaration during a speech at the Detroit Economic Club, where he also claimed that the United States is at the beginning of an economic boom under his administration.

"Starting Feb. 1, we’re not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities because they do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens," Trump said. "And it breeds fraud and crime and all the other problems that come. So we’re not making any payment to anybody that supports sanctuary."

Trump also highlighted moves that his administration has taken to withhold funding for Minnesota amid its fraud scandal.

"We have also suspended payments tied to suspected scammers in Minnesota, of which there are many," Trump said. "It’s a great state. It was a great state. Now it’s getting destroyed by that stupid governor."

The president additionally vowed that his administration would denaturalize foreign-born Somali citizens if they were convicted of fraud, and the Department of Homeland Security is ending its Temporary Protected Status for Somali migrants.
