Embattled actor Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences following an incident at the Academy Awards in which he slapped host Chris Rock over a joke he made at the actor's wife's expense.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith said in a statement, according to Variety. “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

Chris Rock, while on stage, addressed Smith's wife, saying "Jada, I love you. 'G.I. Jane 2,' can’t wait to see it." Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia and shaves her head. Following the remark, Smith came on stage and slapped Rock. He twice shouted "Get my wife’s name out your f*****g mouth!" Smith refused to leave the venue following the incident.

Rock has declined to press charges.

Smith went on to win his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in "King Richard," though his resignation and the ongoing Academy investigation leaves the status of his award unresolved.
