American stranded in Peru calls the lack of information ‘frustrating’
As hundreds of stranded tourists wait for word on when they will be evacuated from the city of Machu Picchu amid Peruvian protests — an American tourist says the lack of information is what is most frustrating.
71-year-old Florida resident Kathryn Martucci was on a group trip with 13 other Americans when Peru went into a state of emergency. Martucci said her group was medically evaluated Friday morning and was told those of a certain age and on medication would be prioritized.
They're told they will be evacuated on Saturday — but no other information has been provided. Many tourists have decided not to wait around, Martucci said — with some walking out of Machu Picchu and hiking eight to 10 hours through the remote terrain.
