George Beebe doesn’t expect Ukraine-Russia war to have ‘domino effect' on China-Taiwan tensions

George Beebe, Director of Grand Strategy at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, explains why the Ukraine-Russia war won’t influence China’s decision to invade against Taiwan. “This is a variation of the old domino theory that you heard during the Vietnam War years. That if South Vietnam were to fall to communism, then other states in the region would fall and you’d have a domino effect, not just throughout the region but throughout the war of the advance of communism,” he explains. “Well, that didn’t happen and the states that were trying to judge whether they ought to challenge the United States and its commitments in various parts of the world actually made those decisions based on local conditions, on the specific aspects of their region and their issues. And I think the Chinese are going to do that vis-à-vis Taiwan.”
