US Energy Sec. introduces nuclear fusion breakthrough, major milestone for future of clean energy
For the first time ever, U.S. scientists have produced a nuclear fusion reaction resulting in a net increase of energy. This feat is considered to be a major milestone in a decades-long attempt to source clean, limitless energy from nuclear fusion which could power homes in the near future, and set an end to US dependence on fossil fuels.
Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Energy Secretary: "Last week at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, scientists at the National Ignition Facility achieved fusion ignition; and that is creating more energy from fusion reactions than the energy used to start the process. It's the first time it has ever been done in a laboratory anywhere in the world, Simply put, this is one of the most impressive scientific feats of the 21st century."
