President Joe Biden will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco, Calif., next month.

"We've been talking about it. The president said he’s looking forward to meeting with President Xi and so, not going to get into details about this meeting that's going to happen... next month," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday. "It's going to be in San Francisco; it's going to be a constructive meeting. The president's looking forward to it."

The meeting will take place amid the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the Golden City, according to The Hill. Sino-American relations have become increasingly strained in recent years amid mounting American efforts to stimulate economic competition with China.

Jean-Pierre insisted that the meeting did not signal any change in White House policy toward China, but that "intense competition means intense diplomacy. That's what you're going to see."

"That's what the president is going to be doing and having a tough conversation but important conversation," she concluded. The meeting follows Secretary of State Antony Blinken's trip to China in June during which he met with senior foreign officials as well as Xi himself.

Blinken had been slated to visit Beijing in February, though the trip was postponed amid the aerial incursion of a suspected Chinese spy balloon that traversed the United States before being shot down off the coast of the Carolinas.
