Blinken wraps up China visit with Xi meeting
The trip makes Blinken the first Seceraty of State to visit the nation on official business in five years.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrapped up a two-day visit to China on Monday after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Great Hall of the People meeting was reportedly confirmed just an hour prior to it kicking off and was geared towards addressing escalating US-China tensions.
In footage released by China's state media broadcaster CCTV, Xi is heard stating "The two sides have agreed to follow through on the common understandings President Biden and I have reached in Bali."
Prior to the meeting, Xi reportedly told Chinese state media that such diplomatic meetings "should always be based on mutual respect and sincerity," adding that he hopes Blinken could make positive contribution to stabilizing China-U.S. relations.
On Saturday, Biden told reporters he hopes to coordinate a meeting with Xi in the near future.
Blinken met with other state officials like China's Foreign Affairs Director Wang Yi, where the pair talked an array of "bilateral and global issues that affect people at home and around the world," the US diplomat wrote on Twitter.
