China and North Korea reach 'important consensus' during President Xi's trip, state media says

Xi said that his visit to North Korea has "successfully concluded," and the relationship between the two countries has reached a "new historical stage."

Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un reached an "important consensus," Xi said on Wednesday. 

The statement was reported on North Korean state media, according to Reuters

Xi arrived in North Korea on Monday for talks with Kim. The visit to the East Asian country is Xi's first in seven years. 

The two countries agreed to safeguard regional and global peace, and Xi said he is willing to work with Kim based on their shared interests. Xi also said that his visit has "successfully concluded," and the relationship between the two countries has reached a "new historical stage." 

Xi said he'd like to meet with Kim again in the future.
