Japan on Monday issued tsunami warnings and ordered evacuations after a series of earthquakes, including one with a 7.6 magnitude, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
More than 65 quakes occurred in Japan and the surrounding area on Monday alone, according to the agency's website, with the most powerful one of 7.6 occurring off the coast of the Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa on the country's western coast around 4 p.m. local time.
Japan issued a tsunami warning for the affected area of the western coast, and waves are expected to be as high as 3 meters, or nearly 10 feet, in some areas.
The quake and series of aftershocks caused multiple buildings to collapse and there have been multiple reports of people trapped due to the quake, according to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa, per the country's public broadcaster NHK.
