Jiang Zemin, president who guided China's economic rise, dies at 96
Jiang led the Communist Party from 1989 to 2002 and was president from 1993 to 2003.
Former China President Jiang Zemin, who oversaw the Asian nation's economic boom after the pro-democracy Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, died Wednesday. He was 96.
Jiang led the Chinese Communist Party from 1989 to 2002 and was president from 1993 to 2003.
"Our beloved Comrade Jiang Zemin died of leukemia and multiple organ failure after all medical treatments had failed," said government officials, according to China Daily, a Chinese Communist Party-controlled outlet that turned its front page and logo black and white to mourn Jiang's death.
