South Korea scrambles jets, fires shots after North Korean drone flies near Seoul

South Korea deployed jets and attack helicopters on Monday after five North Korean drones crossed into its airspace, including one that made it to the northern edge of the capital, Seoul.

The military fired 100 rounds from helicopters but did not shoot the drones down, the BBC reported. One of the attack planes involved later crashed, but its two pilots were unharmed.

A South Korean official said the military had lost track of the unmanned vehicles, but they are not in flight. 

South Korea suspended take-offs and landings at two of its airports for about an hour during the incursion.

Tensions are increasing on the Korean peninsula as the North launched a record number of missiles this year in what Communist officials said were practice to attack the South and the United States.

North Korea last sent a drone across the border in June 2017.
