One killed, at least 58 wounded in Kabul explosion: Afghan officials

One person is dead and at least 58 others are wounded following an explosion in Afghanistan's capital of Kabul on Sunday morning, hospital officials said on Twitter.

Kabul’s Emergency Hospital said that it received 59 victims of the blast, one of whom was dead on arrival, and 33 people were admitted.

Afghanistan's government-run media outlet Bakhtar News reported that officials stated only ten people were "superficially injured" in the explosion.

The Ministry of the Interior said the Sarai-e-Shahzada blast happened after "a thief hurled a hand grenade at the crowd to steal people’s money," the outlet reported. Law enforcement were still investigating, and the perpetrator was still at large as of Sunday.

Afghan officials did not give an immediate reason for the discrepancy in the number of wounded.

This is the first explosion in Kabul in months and the Taliban has set up dozens of checkpoints throughout Kabul in order to thwart potential terrorist attacks, according to The Associated Press.

The biggest threat of violence in the region comes from Islamic State in Khorasan Province (IS-K), the terror group responsible for August's Kabul airport attack that killed 13 U.S. service members and at least 170 Afghans.

IS-K claimed responsibility on Saturday for an attack on a Taliban vehicle in Kabul and another explosion in the Herat province, but the attacks have not been confirmed, the AP reported.
