Amsterdam police warn of potential new unrest in the city after last week's antisemitic attacks
The warning comes after the city extended a ban on protests through Thursday. Additional protests occurred Monday anyways, when dozens of people armed with sticks and firecrackers set a tram on fire.
A senior Amsterdam police officer on Tuesday warned that the city was hearing similar calls for unrest that they heard last week when a group of Palestinian protesters attacked Israeli fans outside of a soccer match.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema last week said the attackers scoured the city on scooters in search of Israeli fans. The warning comes after the city extended a ban on protests through Thursday. Additional protests occurred Monday anyways, when dozens of people armed with sticks and firecrackers set a tram on fire.
Olivier Dutilh, of the Amsterdam police force, told a court on Tuesday that there are “signals that there are calls for similar” unrest in the west side of the city, per the Associated Press.
Halsema, the Amsterdam chief of police, and the city's top public prosecutor also published a report on Monday that revealed there were incidents incited by supporters of both sides of the war in Gaza in Amsterdam last week.
Authorities said there were social media posts that threatened Israeli fans on the day before the game. Also, Israeli fans ripped down a Palestinian flag that night and several beat a cab driver. Cab drivers attempted to unite online in response, and sought to target a casino where 400 Israeli fans were located but police were able to avoid a major confrontation.
After the game, Israeli protesters were seen “running around with sticks destroying things,” according to the report. But pro-Palestinian protesters were also "moving in small groups, by foot, scooter or car, quickly attacking [Israeli] fans before disappearing,” the City Hall timeline said.
Police said there has been a tense atmosphere in the city since the attacks. A total of eight people are in custody over last week’s violence, and their ages range from 16 to 37.
