Europe this week reported its first confirmed death from the monkeypox virus, one of just six deaths worldwide attributed to the disease and only the second so far outside of Africa.

Spanish health authorities reported the death, though they gave no clarifying details or information surrounding it.

The death is just the sixth monkeypox fatality reported worldwide, and the second outside of Africa; Brazil reported one death from the virus on Friday.

Nearly all of the cases worldwide have been reported in gay men, with the World Health Organization earlier this week warning gay men to reduce their number of sexual partners for the time being to help prevent the spread of the virus.
